Suidobashi Night Entrance

Suidobashi sits where central Tokyo starts to thin toward the university district — a neighbourhood of train overpasses, student bars, and walkways that seem designed to move people through rather than linger. This photograph was taken at one of its street-level entrances after dark, when the usual commuter bustle is replaced by a cooler, slower kind of attention.

The image belongs to Mike Leonard's ongoing series of Tokyo nocturnal photography — a body of work begun in 2018 that documents how the city transforms under artificial light. The entrance, the concrete stairway, the light overhead: mundane elements that in this frame become unexpectedly still.

Printed on museum-quality archival paper using pigment inks, this work retains the tonal nuance of a night photograph — deep shadows with held detail, light that glows rather than bleaches. Each print is avaiable in a limited range of sizes.
